Why Choose A Coast Guard Inspected Vessel?
While on vacation or wanting to plan your next event in Fort Lauderdale, there are a lot of boat rental options - some legal, some not legal. We would like to take a moment to educate you on the difference.
The two main types of charters we see most commonly in this area are:
1. Coast Guard Certified (also known as Passenger for Hire) and
2. Bareboat Charters.
Passenger for Hire are boats that are Coast Guard inspected to carry passengers. They are inspected every year by the Coast Guard to make sure all safety equipment is up to date and operational. All captains are licensed and have taken a Coast Guard approved test to carry passengers. They are also required to be part of a drug testing consortium for random screenings.
When you charter (or “rent”) a Coast Guard Certified boat, all you need to worry about is what to bring to eat and drink for your party!
Bareboat charters are very popular. They are still considered a recreational style charter due to the fact that the boat has not been built to commercial passenger specifications and the captain does not need to be licensed. A bareboat contract must be signed by the renter as well as the boat owner. The renter must then find their own driver for the boat and pay them directly. The owner of the boat is not allowed on the boat during the duration of the rental. Also, the renter must pay for all provisions, including fuel and insurance for the charter. If any of these rules are not followed and you are stopped by the Coast Guard, they could promptly escort your party back to the dock, and your fun day on the water is abruptly brought to an end, and you may not receive your money back.
Your goal should be a hassle-free day on the water!!
